Holiday Sleep Survival Guide for Babies: Tips from a Certified Sleep Coach

The holidays are a magical time, filled with joy, laughter, and… disrupted sleep schedules. For parents of young babies, navigating the festivities while maintaining some semblance of a sleep routine can feel like a Herculean task. But fear not! As a certified pediatric sleep coach, I'm here to offer some practical tips to help your little one (and you!) survive the holiday season with minimal sleep disruption.

1. Maintain Consistency (As Much as Possible):

  • Nap Times: Even with holiday outings, try to stick to your baby's usual nap times as closely as possible. Pack a portable blackout shade or a stroller cover to create a dark, quiet environment for naps.

  • Bedtime Routine: While the excitement might be high, keep your bedtime routine as consistent as possible. A warm bath, a calming story, and a quiet, dark room can signal to your baby that it's time to sleep.

2. Create a Calm Sleep Environment:

  • Travel Crib: If you're traveling, bring your baby's familiar travel crib or pack 'n play. This provides a consistent sleep space that feels safe and secure.

  • White Noise: Use a white noise machine to drown out unfamiliar sounds and create a soothing sleep environment.

  • Dim the Lights: Minimize bright lights in the evenings (this includes screens).

3. Embrace Flexibility:

  • Adjust Nap Times: If your baby is overtired due to holiday excitement, consider adjusting nap times slightly to prevent a complete meltdown.

  • Short Naps: If short naps are the norm, don't stress about trying to extend them.

  • Early Bedtime: If your baby is struggling, consider an earlier bedtime to catch up on some much-needed sleep.

4. Minimize Stress and Over-Stimulation:

  • Limit Guests: If possible, limit the number of guests during nap times or in the evenings.

  • Quiet Time: Create designated quiet time for your baby during the day to allow them to recharge.

  • Step Away: If your baby becomes overstimulated, don't hesitate to step away from the festivities to calm them down.

5. Prioritize Self-Care:

  • Ask for Help: Don't hesitate to ask for help from family and friends. Whether it's watching the baby while you nap or simply bringing a meal, every bit helps.

  • Take Breaks: Even short breaks throughout the day can make a big difference in your mood and energy levels.

  • Remember: This is Temporary: The holiday season is a whirlwind. Remember that this period of disrupted sleep is temporary, and things will eventually return to normal, especially if you have good sleep habits in place.

6. Trust Your Instincts:

The holidays can be a joyful time, but they can also be challenging for parents of young babies. By implementing these strategies and prioritizing your baby's sleep needs, you can help ensure a more peaceful and enjoyable holiday season for everyone.

Every baby is different. Trust your instincts and do that works best for your family. If you're struggling, don't hesitate to reach out to book your 30 minute Sweet Dreams Starter call to learn how I can help your family get the gift of sleep.
